Mary's Club Mural, 2021 and 129 SW Broadway, 2024

I don’t know if there are currently any plans in the works to demolish this 100+ year old building at 129 SW Broadway but thought I would like to document her while she still stands. I live a few blocks away now and walk by several times a week. My heart always swells with longing. She was the former home of beloved Mary’s Club as well as the Stewart Hotel and Tugboat Brewing.

in December 2021, Mary’s Club, Portland, Oregon’s oldest strip club, closed it’s doors for the first time since 1954 after its home at 129 SW Broadway was sold. She is doing fine now in the location a couple blocks away but I miss ducking into the dark, dusty confines of the old spot for a quick one. I always liked to grab a stool at the end of the bar near the cigarette machine and the painting of the Volcano Goddess. I hope that, when they tear her. down and build condos, the ghosts of the Stewart Hotel occasionally make their presence known to the new residents.
